National Innovation Competition (2007)

The National Innovation Competition (NIC) is the Innovation Fund’s competition for promoting technological innovation in South African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

It undertakes this through two dimensions of competition, the first being in the form of business plans, for students, registered at universities and universities of technology (the student business plan competition), and the second being a competition amongst these institutions to award the most innovative institution.

The competition aims to ensure that high calibre technological innovations emanating from students at HEIs have the opportunity to be researched, developed, show-cased and ultimately commercialised.

The Innovation Fund is an instrument of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) established for the funding of innovative science, engineering and technology development programmes.

A unique logo was designed for the 2007 competition.

Posters were commissioned which had to appeal to university and technikon students. The concept was a student with objects or ideas literally exploding out of his head.

The concept was carried through to PowerPoint slides.
